Musk notes that Twitter's purge is more conservative than its policy suggests, targeting accounts that "have had no activity for several years." He warns users that the result may lead to a drop in their follower count, particularly affecting older Twitter accounts that gained many followers in the early days of the social network.

In a follow-up tweet, Musk clarifies, in response to a question about username availability, that "yes," many usernames are about to become available as a result of this move. However, he does not clarify how users can acquire these usernames beyond the usual method of attempting to create a new account with a specific name.
